Hamburg, sultry, 32 degrees. One of the hottest days of the year. Actually, one would like to sit in front of the fan and do exactly one thing in this cycle weather inside: nothing. But ma blogger buddy Simone of S-kitchen and AVERNA have jointly invited to the Sicilian dinner with summer drinks. It was a matter of honor that I give myself a proper inner push, throwing myself into something light and let the man drive me to Eimsbüttel for a short while with the blower fully open and clearly endangering the hair.

An hour later and with freshly combed hairstyle I am superhappy. Because the nice shop, in which the dinner evening is a guest, not only has a fantastic air conditioning. There are also – I had not seen it that way – incredibly delicious and refreshing drinks, which are great for a hot summer evening. My summer discovery in terms of drinks, so to speak:

AVERNA soda with orange and rosemary – super fast, super easy, super delicious and a perfect summer drink

The bitter liqueur AVERNA I knew so far mainly as a digestif, which one likes to drink at the Italian. After the luscious food instead of schnapps, no. But that the Sicilian Amaro is wonderful as a light aperitif and a refreshing summer drink really surprised me. But what can I say: I'm really excited. Mostly because you do not need fifty thousand fancy ingredients, just one Shot Amaro, chilled mineral water and a few ice cubes, The whole thing is then uncomplicated with a Piece of orange peel and a sprig of rosemary adds … and ZACK! … you have one refined, ice cold bubbly summer drink in the hand.

The subtle, slightly bitter herbal taste paired with light sweetness and the sunny freshness of the orange I find stunning on hot days. Due to the high proportion of water, the whole advantageously does not completely kill the socks – but care, of course, this refreshing tasting drink contains alcohol and you should consider that accordingly. Don't drink and drive and all – we all know that.

And one, two glasses of this delicious aperitif then do their job: you get really hungry. It's wonderful that Koch Bruno is already working hard on the steaming pots and conjures typical Sicilian delicacies for us. It smells great. Great, when other people cook for me – I love to watch. Especially when someone very caring, I still pushes an ice cold glass with my new favorite drink in the hand. Running.

Spaghetti, roast vegetables, spinach and rack of lamb taste delicious and fit surprisingly well into the hot evening. The Italians have it just in terms of enjoyment and summer on it.

Unaltered Amaro culture since 1868 – and a nice ritual after a successful dinner. (No, the glass did not accidentally fall over.)

After the sweet dinner ending with a sinful lime soufflé, we can indulge in the Amaro culture once again. After all, the recipe of AVERNA has remained unchanged since 1868 and wants to be appreciated accordingly.

Incidentally, the bitter liqueur was invented – as legend has it – by Italian Benedictine monks who devoted themselves to herbal medicine and medicine in their monastery. They developed the unique liqueur recipe with the ingredients of Sicily: Mediterranean herbs, roots, citrus fruits and pomegranates. In gratitude for his commitment to the region, the monks then presented this recipe in 1845 to the textile retailer Salvatore Averna. The family Averna initially made the Amaro privately for themselves, business partners and guests. He was always so good that Salvatore's son then began around 1900 to distribute AVERNA under the family name at international fairs. This promptly led to a flourishing, small family business. Today AVERNA belongs to the Gruppo Campari and is still produced according to the best kept secret recipe in Sicily. And now we are going to the bottom of this secret of taste again …

To appreciate the taste of Sicily and to play with complex flavors: the AVERNA ritual

  • Add a little Averna along with 1-2 ice cubes, fresh herbs of your choice (such as mint, rosemary or thyme) and zest (the skinned peel) of an untreated citrus (lemon, orange or lime) into a bulbous jar.
  • Gently tilt the glass, wrap it by hand, and slowly roll it on the table. This is how the different flavors combine beautifully with each other.
  • Sip a sip from the glass and consciously enjoy the full-bodied aromas of lemon, orange, licorice and spices.

Depending on the amount and composition of the herbs and citrus fruits you can create very different, exciting taste sensations and emphasize the different flavors of the Amaro. A really nice and conscious graduation for a meal with nice people (remark of the Frolleinredaktion: In any case, much nicer, as quick to flip a schnapps on Ex, ne.)

From this nice, decelerated evening elated and inspired, I then made myself smooth on foot on the way home. A small nightly and very private stroll through a summer-warm Hamburg with many good-humored and relaxed people on the streets, in front of cafes and restaurants. A great atmosphere, which leaves the 40 minutes walk on the fly. From time to time you should really just take more time for beautiful moments and enjoy them consciously. In this sense:

Enjoy the summer. And have it delicious!

P.S .: Fancy more cheers? There are others here delicious recipes for cocktails and drinks,
